BROWSE KOPPELL RIVER REALTY LISTINGS
Yonkers is Westchester’s largest and most ethnically diverse city,
a hilly conglomeration of suburban neighborhoods and city-style high rises
with ambitious plans for economic revitalization.
Tucked alongside the Hudson River and the Bronx’s northern border,
Yonkers’ more than 18 square miles comprise 38 neighborhoods, from
the tony Crestwood and Lawrence Park West in the city’s suburban,
northeast quadrant, to the more urban environs of Nodine Hill and South
Broadway in the city’s southwest.
With more than 197,000 residents… Yonkers is New York State’s
fourth largest city.
In 1646, the Dutch West India Company granted Adriaen van der Donck,
a young Dutch lawyer, the right to buy the land that later would later
become the city from its American Indian inhabitants. His nickname, DeJonkeer,
meaning “the young gentleman” would give rise to the city’s
name.
Yonkers remained a private manor through much of the 18th century, under
the control of the Philipse family, whose manor house still stands on
the northeast corner of Larkin Plaza. At the turn of the 19th century,
however, after being incorporated as a town in 1788, Yonkers started to
become an industrial community, spawning saw and grist mills
Yonkers prides itself on being the birthplace of golf in America. The
city still features two county-owned and operated golf cause, as well
as more than 100 municipal parks.
